Collagenase is enzyme that cleaving the bonds between neutral amino acids (X) and glycine in amino acid sequence Pro-X-Gli-Pro. This sequence is often found in collagen. Collagenase is unique among proteases due to its ability to break down collagen fibrils found in all types of connective tissue, such as skin, bones, tendons, blood vessels.
The ability of collagenase to destroy collagen is used in cultivation of human tumor cells, mouse kidney cells, brain nerve cells and many other cells except for epithelial ones. Its effect on cells is rather mild, since it works at physiological temperature and pH, has no mechanical effect, and also does not require special equipment.
