The date was chosen symbolically – February 29, the rarest day on the calendar. In a non-leap year (such as 2026), it is celebratedon February 28.
In Russia, Rare Disease Day has been held since 2008. Later, the Federal Law "On the Fundamentals of Protecting the Health of Citizens in the Russian Federation" was amended to include a section dedicated to rare diseases. It contains a detailed list of rare diseases, which is available on the Ministry of Health website.
Diseases are considered rare when they affect no more than 10 people per 100,000 population. Around 8,000 orphan diseases are known worldwide, and in about 80% of cases, they are caused by genetic disorders. Approximately 350 of these can now be effectively treated.
The life expectancy of patients with rare diseases is on average 25–30% shorter, and for some conditions, the mortality rate reaches 100% – certain diseases lead to the death of a child within the first days of life.
Understanding the importance of timely diagnosis for patients with orphan diseases, PanEco Group pays special attention to the development of this field and takes part in professional events. We are participants in the "Commonwealth Without Borders" – International Forum on Diagnosis and Treatment of Hereditary Orphan Diseases.
The Forum brings together physicians from over 20 specialties and representatives of companies from more than 20 countries, making it a key event for the professional community in the field of rare diseases. Participation in such forums allows us to stay informed about the current needs of the medical community, exchange experience with leading specialists, and improve our products for the early diagnosis of rare diseases.
