Kanamycin sulfate is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that inhibits Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and mycoplasmas. Its action involves targeted binding to the bacterial 70S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting ribosomal translocation and causing miscoding, further disrupting protein synthesis. Kanamycin sulfate can be used to inhibit bacterial contamination in cell cultures.
