This product is an alkaloid isolated from plants of the genus Colchicum that inhibits mitotic cell division by binding to tubulin and preventing microtubule polymerization.

Intended use: Used in cytogenetic research to arrest mitotic cell division at metaphase for subsequent chromosome analysis. Used in the culture of lymphocytes and other cell types in vitro to accumulate metaphase spreads. Intended for laboratory and research use, not for diagnosis or treatment in humans or animals.
Directions for use: Prepare a sterile colchicine stock solution, for example in sterile distilled water or PBS. Add to the cell culture 1.5–2 hours before the end of incubation at a final concentration optimized for the cell type and experimental conditions, usually 0.1–1.0 µg/ml. Follow safety precautions when handling colchicine, avoiding dust formation and contact with skin and mucous membranes.
